Past, Present, and Future of Developer Productivity Research

In this talk, Abi Noda (founder of DX) and Margaret-Anne Storey (co-author of SPACE, University of Victoria) will explore the evolution of developer productivity through the lens of groundbreaking research insights from the past couple of decades.

They’ll explore how our understanding of developer productivity has evolved along with the means of measuring it. They’ll distill recent research findings into actionable takeaways for practitioners. And, they’ll discuss the future frontiers of developer productivity research.

Meet the Speakers

Margaret-Anne Storey

Margaret-Anne Storey is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Victoria and a Canada Research Chair in Human and Social Aspects of Software Engineering. Her research provides new theories and insights about how software tools, communication media, and data visualizations can improve how software engineers and knowledge workers explore, understand, analyze, and share complex information and knowledge. In turn, these theories have transformed critical engineering systems and tools developed and used by industry practitioners, non-profit partners, and research scientists. Dr. Storey regularly consults with global software companies, most recently, Microsoft and getDX, to ensure the real-world applicability of her research contributions and tools. She is also a driving force behind diversity in software engineering: in 2016, she was awarded the Lise Meitner Guest Professorship at Lund University to mentor women in science and engineering; in 2023, she held the Verena Myer Visiting Professorship at University of Zurich to promote diversity.
Abi Noda

Abi Noda is a programmer, researcher, and entrepreneur focused on helping organizations measure and improve developer productivity. He is currently the CEO and Co-Founder of DX, a developer metrics and insights platform designed by leading researchers.

In addition to running DX, Abi is the author and host of the Engineering Enablement newsletter and podcast, which cover the latest methods and research on developer productivity. Prior to DX, Abi held CTO roles at several companies and was the founder and CEO of Pull Panda, which was acquired by GitHub in 2019.
